Argonaut Liquor Grand Opening

BOTTLE SHOCK ON COLFAX
New Icon Heralds The Revitalization of Capitol Hill, Delights Downtown Commuters and Piques The Interest of Denver Wine Enthusiasts November 11, 2008 (DENVER). It wasn’t so long ago that Playboy magazine labeled Colfax "the longest, wickedest street in America,” but one of the street’s most established and respected businesses knows that this infamous artery is as important to downtown Denver’s future as its past. Family owned Argonaut Wine & Liquor could have erected its classic new 40,000 sq. ft. architectural beauty anywhere in Denver, but chose to stay on the same block of East Colfax where Lazer Robinson with sons Hank and Jack Robinson started the business in 1965. “Argonaut is a Colfax institution, and who is more qualified to kick-start the revitalization of this particular stretch of Colfax than a 40-year community establishment?” states Ron Vaughn co-owner, and son-in-law of founder Hank Robinson.
But what the Denver business community, Capitol Hill residents and Colfax commuters will soon discover, is that Argonaut brings more than a classic architectural face-lift to this infamous strip. The highly anticipated Argonaut “sign” will be hoisted onto the corner of the structure and unveiled to the community at 10:00 am on December 3. The sign may be a commuter landmark for the next 40 years so the Robinson family turned to national experts to design and create it. And what is it? Well, let’s just say the city experienced a bit of bottle-shock when approached for approval.
Approval went through a few iterations - but ultimately it was agreed that the three-dimensional bottle was not only consistent with the new Main Street Zoning plan, it was a bold and fitting toast to the area’s redevelopment initiative. So up it will go. Fifteen feet of bubbling champagne suspended two stories high at the corner of Colfax and Washington. The Mayor, along with community and business leaders will be on hand for the December 3rd event. Argonaut is Denver’s largest volume wine and liquor store, but volume outgrew the building years ago. “Our new building is much larger, more efficient, greener, and a much better shopping experience for our customers”, said Vaughn. The new store will feature a temperature controlled fine wine room, a tasting area, better lighting throughout the store, two times more cooler space, and 60% more display area. “The customer is going to love the new experience”, says Ron. “And those who know Argonaut know that we’re all about catering to the customer”. And they’re catering to the environment too. The project was designed by Brad Buchanan, Buchanan Yonushewski Group, LLC, and is being overseen by Hampton Development Company; a locally owned development company operated by principals Jeff and Scott Robinson. According to Jeff Robinson, “We brought on Brian Levitt one of the foremost leaders in green building in the country, to create one of the greenest liquor stores in the world.” The Store’s green features will include solar power, locally sourced and recycled-content structure, high efficiency HVAC units, lighting, and water fixtures, high-performance glazing, insulation and building materials, construction recycling during and after construction, and many others.” “Given the high-energy demands of a modern liquor store, we felt it was imperative to implement a number of high-tech and low-tech sustainable construction solutions to reduce Argonaut’s ecological footprint during construction and after. This will certainly be the greenest liquor store that I am aware of, “says Brian Levitt of HDC.
The highly anticipated sign will be unveiled during a “Pop the Cork Celebration” at 10:00 am on December 3. Argonaut invites metro Denver businesses, community leaders, customers and friends to take part in the grand opening festivities from 10:00 am until 11:00 pm. on Wednesday, December 3, with events and specials continuing throughout the week. Many community businesses will support the event with food, beverages and services including; CityGrille and CityPub, Dora’s Mexican Restaurant, Appaloosa Grill, Mici’s, IZZE, Freshies, Alpine Food Service, Indulgences, Caffe Sanora, Red Bull, Rocky Mountain Valet, MLA Photonix, Country Club Flowers, Mountain High Tree, Lawn and Landscape, The Wilhelm Group and Wright Group Event Services. Beginning at 10:00 am the public can preview the new superstore where there will be fantastic prizes, suprises and hourly in-store specials. “This family-friendly event celebrates our city’s vibrant future and colorful past, and is our way of thanking Denver for 40 years of support,” said Vaughn.
Passers by will notice the name on the street-facing placard is Robinson Building - a tribute to the quietly philanthropic family, and Hank Robinson, the big-hearted community advocate and Argonaut founder. Hank has always been so respectful of

Organic menu tasting, book signing and holiday shopping will benefit local organization with a distinctly fresh philosophy - November 7th from 5:00 to 9:00 pm
No prices, no cash registers, just whatever amount you can pay or time you can give for a delicious hot lunch served with friendly service and a side of dignity. That is what you'll find at the SAME Café where community members from all walks of life flock for a fresh and healthy organic meal.
CO/RK Gallery Manager, Megan Chadez, was impressed by the concept when she first learned about SAME Café, an East Colfax neighbor, and felt it was a philosophy that she and CO/RK Gallery could gladly endorse.
To help spread the word and generate support, CO/RK Gallery is hosting a SAME Café menu tasting on November 7th from 5:00 to 9:00 pm. The event guests can sample the fresh, mostly organic ingredients that make up the café's menu items - such as Gorgonzola Squash Soup, Warm Black-eyed Pea Salad and Pesto and Sausage Pizza - and learn about volunteer opportunities with the organization.
In addition, local singer-songwriter, poet and author Dave Delacroix will be signing copies of his new book, Roman Holiday: Veni, Vidi, I Crashed!. Event guests can also get a jump on their holiday shopping with one-of-a-kind arts and crafts. 20% of every Desert Heart jewelry purchase will be donated directly to SAME Café, a not-for-profit organization.
CO/RK Gallery recently celebrated its one-year anniversary, having opened its doors in October of 2007 to offer unique, handmade American arts and crafts in glass, metal, wood, pottery, fiber mixed media and more. It is located at 2220 E. Colfax Avenue in Denver near the corner of Colfax and York.

Wayne Jakino Passed away on July 16th
7/18/2008
|
|
Wayne Jakino died at home July 16 after a long illness. Funeral services will be Wednesday, July 23rd at 3:00 p.m. at Metro Community Church, 960 Clarkson. There will be a celebration of Wayne’s life on Sunday, August 3rd at 2pm at Charlie's. Wayne was a very instrumental figure in Colfax on the Hill, Inc. and the community, laying the foundation for the Colfax and neighborhood involvement we are building on today. His charismatic personality was always a welcome addition to any event and his willingness to provide support helped many organizations and individuals achieve the success they know today. He will be missed, but always remembered as his influence is visible throughout our community. Wayne came to Colfax on the Hill in about 1991, having previously opened a bar/restaurant further east on Colfax in Aurora. He and his partner John King had purchased the site of the former Emerson Street East Sports Bar, and it became Wayne’s task to inform the Colfax merchants, property owners and neighborhoods of his plans to open one of Denver’s first gay bars in the ‘hood. Somehow he managed to not only attain COTH support for his plan but quickly became part of the leadership of COTH and served as its board president for two terms (circa 1994-98). He also joined the board of Capitol Hill United Neighborhoods and helped both organizations over the years to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for Colfax and neighborhood community organizations, including the upcoming 11th annual Colfax on the Hill/Charlie’s Golf Tournament. Wayne also was a state and national leader in the gay rights movement and was a co-founder of the International Gay Rodeo Association where he traveled across North America as its spokesman and event announcer. Former COTH Executive Director Dave Walstrom, who worked closely with Wayne over the years, believes one of Wayne’s great contributions to Colfax and Greater Capitol Hill was the fact that like any other community of individuals, the gay community wanted to improve the quality of life of the place where they live and work. Wayne provided the leadership to put that community service energy in place here. Moreover, Wayne knew that getting divergent lifestyle groups working together on common community goals, problems and projects would, in the process, create friendships and support relationships between them that would provide the glue to hold the community together when times got tough economically, socially, politically. No doubt gay prejudice still exists in Greater Capitol Hill to some extent, but it is hardly an issue these days. More than perhaps anyone else, we have Wayne Jakino to thank for that. And this remembrance of Wayne by his employee and personal assistant, Jay Mason: “When I first came to Denver, I was a quiet Indiana farm boy. At the time I was working at a restaurant called Decisions on Colfax. I went to a meeting of the Colorado Tavern Guild and met a man with a voice that had such a passion in it that I had to know him better. When the restaurant closed, Wayne offered to pay me to clean the parking lot for money. Instead of making me feel like a "parking lot cleaner", he worked with me to realize the strengths I had within me. Soon after, I started working as his secretary and personal assistant. Over the years, I had the privilege of meeting people from the Governor to the amazing people at Colfax on the Hill. Wayne once told me that the most important thing anyone can do is to have a charitable heart and to "find your voice". I think what he was telling me was in fact, the most important thing you can do is "help someone else find their voice" and I will do my best to continue his work in his honor. ”
In lieu of flowers, Wayne’s friends are in the process of establishing The Wayne Jakino Scholarship Fund. Once the details of the scholarship fund are learned, COTH will post a notice on our website for those who would like to make a contribution.
